Micro-macramé as a practice of attention: tension, repetition and deliberate making shaped into a talisman.
Nodus Arcanum: The Technology of the Anchor
Nodus Arcanum is an exploration of the knot as a meeting point between material, attention, and intention.
I approach micro-macramé as both a craft and a manual technology of attention. The work is slow and precise. Thread must be held under tension. A pattern has to be followed. When attention wanders, the hands reveal it immediately, and the work asks you to return.
In my workshops, you choose a gemstone as a focal point and build a talisman around it, knot by knot. Over several hours, repetition creates rhythm. The distinction between thinking about the work and actually being present with it becomes increasingly visible.
The practice draws on more than a decade of working with knots and materials, alongside my interest in animistic traditions and depth psychology. I am interested in the ways physical objects can gather meaning through contact, repetition, memory, and deliberate attention. Rather than treating the talisman as something that possesses power by itself, I approach it as a material record of a relationship: between maker, matter, and the act of staying with the work.
Micro-macramé offers very little room for abstraction. Tension is either maintained or it is not. A knot is placed correctly or it has to be undone. Distraction becomes visible in the material.
This is where the practice becomes useful to me.
To continue tying while noticing distraction, frustration, impatience, or the urge to rush is to practice returning. The finished talisman becomes a physical record of that process: evidence that attention was gathered and sustained long enough to give something form.
No previous micro-macramé experience is required. You will be guided through the foundational knots, tension, structure, and construction of your piece. Materials, including your gemstone, are provided.
You leave with a finished talisman, but also with something less tangible: direct experience of using the hands to anchor attention and a simple practice you can return to beyond the workshop.
